Constable, John - 1776–1837, The english language painter, w. Suffolk. Constable and Turner were the leading figures in English panorama painting of the 19th penny. Constable became famous for his landscapes of Suffolk, Hampstead, Salisbury, and Brighton. The son of a prosperous callier, he showed artistic skill while extremely young nevertheless did not spend himself to art until he was twenty three, when he visited London to examine at the Hoheitsvoll Academy. Affected by the 17th-century landscape painters Ruisdael and Claude Lorrain, his graceful approach to mother nature paralleled in spirit regarding his contemporary, the poet Wordsworth. Constable's direct observations of character and his free use of cracked color were extraordinary in his day. He received yet modest identification in England, staying tardily accepted to the Regal Academy in 1829. His work was more popular in France. In 1824, his View on the Stour (1819) and The Hay Wain (1821; National Gall., London) had been exhibited on the Salon in Paris, winning gold medals. His work made a profound impression on the French romantics like the young Delacroix and Bonington. Later his painting motivated the Barbizon school and, more indirectly, the general span of French 19th-century landscape artwork. In the United States he is represented in the Metropolitan Art gallery and the Frick Collection, Nyc, in the Mellon Center to get British Fine art, New Destination, Conn., in addition to the art galleries of Philadelphia, Toledo, and Chicago. Splendid examples of his work will be contained in the National Gallery, Birmingham and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
